Chapter twenty-one

A blur of classroom doors and lockers zip past my peripherals as I rush down the school hallway. I briefly think about rallying Ambrosia and Brock before confronting Mother Magdala, but I know I don’t have time.

I’m unsure exactly what I’m looking for, but Oliver mentioned he spoke to the new counselor, so she must be here somewhere. As I turn the corner into the administration hall, I see a gold plaque that looks shinier than the others next to the neighboring doors. Sure enough, it reads, ‘Ms. Magdala - School Counselor.’

Without a second thought, I swing open the office door. Mother Magdala sits at a desk, marking through papers. She wears a sleek black pantsuit, and her hair is loose, bouncing curls falling at her shoulders. She looks like a regular modern woman, and I can’t comprehend how she learned to assimilate so quickly.

She looks up at me with an innocent twinkle in her eye and a slight smirk on her lips. “Hello, Rose. I have been expecting you. Don’t you just love my new office?”

I slam the door behind me without taking my eyes off her. “No, I do not. What are you doing here?” I furrow my brow and muster a tone as cold as I can summon.

Mother Magdala looks at me curiously and stands behind her desk. “Why do you seem so angry, Rose? I am only learning to adapt to my new environment.”

“Where is my journal?” I don’t have time to play her games.

“Ah, that’s why you are upset. You can just start your stories in a new one.” She waves her hand as if brushing away a silly thought. “It’s not like you will go missing the ones you wrote. They are already all here in your world.”

My hands clench by my side, and my face beats red with anger. “I need that journal so I can finish all of your stories. Everyone needs to go back to where they came from. Especially you.”

“But I don’t want to go back. Don’t I have a say in what should happen to me?”

This statement catches me a bit off guard. For a second, I almost sympathize with her, but then I remember why all the characters have to go back. “You can’t stay here, though. You will start to disappear. I have seen it myself. Plus, you are ruining people’s lives.”

Mother Magdala makes a clicking noise with her tongue. “Now, Rose, I am only doing what people ask of me. They want to not feel pain, and I deliver that. Besides, it's benefiting both of us. Don’t you think I would have already been gone by now if I hadn’t found a way to make myself more real? I read your journal. You know, your story about me is very short. What a shame. But no matter. I will just have to write my own story.” Her lips curl up in a full, mischievous smile, and her eyes shade darker.

So that is why she hasn’t disappeared yet.
